The Test That Looks Beyond “Everything’s Normal”

If you’re a parent who has heard the words “everything looks normal” while still feeling that something isn’t quite right with your child, you are not alone—and you are not imagining your concerns.

We often hear parents say:

“Her test results came back normal.”

“We tried another supplement protocol, but nothing changed.”

“We received a diagnosis, but we’re still unsure what to do next.”

Normal medical test results can be reassuring. They may help rule out particular diseases, injuries, or other concerns. But they don’t always explain why a child is finding everyday functions such as sleep, digestion, movement, sensory processing, or emotional regulation more challenging.

That is where looking at nervous system function may provide another piece of information.

At Coast Family Chiropractic, we use INSiGHT Scans as part of our chiropractic assessment to observe patterns associated with autonomic activity, muscle activity, and the body’s response to stress.

These scans do not diagnose medical conditions or replace medical testing. They provide a different perspective on how a child’s body may be adapting and functioning.

Why We Look at the Nervous System

The nervous system helps coordinate communication throughout the body.

It receives information from inside and outside the body, processes that information, and helps organise an appropriate response. It is involved in movement, posture, sensation, alertness, digestion, heart rate, breathing, and many other automatic functions.

The autonomic nervous system is the part responsible for many processes that happen without conscious thought. It helps the body shift between states of activity, stress, rest, and recovery.

For children, this capacity to adapt is particularly important. Their nervous systems are developing rapidly while responding to physical growth, learning, relationships, sensory input, illness, sleep, and the demands of everyday life.

When a child is experiencing ongoing challenges, it can be helpful to consider not only the symptoms themselves but also how their nervous system appears to be responding to load.

This doesn’t mean that every concern has a single neurological cause. Children are complex, and their experiences are influenced by many physical, developmental, environmental, and emotional factors.

It simply means nervous system function may be one relevant part of the broader picture.

Looking Beyond Pathology

Blood tests, imaging, EEGs, and other medical investigations are designed for specific clinical purposes. Depending on the test, they may help identify disease, injury, nutritional deficiencies, structural changes, or abnormal electrical activity.

INSiGHT Scans do something different.

They are used within chiropractic care to observe functional patterns related to:

  • autonomic nervous system activity
  • muscle activity and tension along the spine
  • heart rate variability and physiological adaptability.

They cannot determine whether a child has colic, reflux, ADHD, autism, anxiety, an ear infection, a hormonal condition, or a sensory processing disorder.

They may, however, provide additional information that a chiropractor can consider alongside the child’s history, physical examination, presentation, and care goals.

The findings should never be interpreted in isolation.

What Makes INSiGHT Scans Different?

At Coast Family Chiropractic, scans may be completed at the beginning of care to establish a baseline.

Where clinically appropriate, they may be repeated later to observe whether the measured patterns have changed over time.

This allows us to compare results rather than relying solely on how a child appears or how symptoms have changed from one visit to the next.

However, a change in a scan does not prove that chiropractic care has treated a particular condition. Scan results are one component of the clinical picture and must be interpreted carefully.

They can help us ask questions such as:

  • Are the measurements consistent from one side of the body to the other?
  • Are there areas of increased or reduced muscle activity?
  • What does the HRV measurement suggest about autonomic variability at that moment?
  • Have these patterns changed since the previous assessment?
  • Do the findings correspond with what we observe during the clinical examination?

This is less about finding a hidden diagnosis and more about gathering additional information to guide individualised chiropractic care.

The Three Scans, in Plain Language

We use three INSiGHT technologies together. Each measures something different.

NeuroThermal Scan

The NeuroThermal Scan measures temperature differences along the skin beside the spine.

Skin temperature can be influenced by blood flow and autonomic activity, as well as environmental conditions and other physiological factors. The scan may help identify patterns or asymmetries that can be monitored over time.

It does not identify where the body is “storing stress,” diagnose dysautonomia, or explain specific symptoms such as reflux, allergies, constipation, or recurrent infections.

Its value lies in providing a repeatable measurement that can be considered alongside the rest of the assessment.

NeuroSpinal Surface EMG Scan

Surface electromyography, or sEMG, records electrical activity produced by muscles alongside the spine.

This helps us observe patterns of muscle activation, tension, balance, or fatigue while the child is being scanned.

The results can be influenced by posture, movement, muscle recruitment, and the conditions under which the measurement is taken. For that reason, sEMG results are interpreted as functional information rather than as a diagnosis.

The scan does not diagnose ADHD, autism, anxiety, sensory processing differences, or particular nervous system “types.”

Instead, it helps us better understand how the muscles supporting the spine are functioning at the time of assessment.

Heart Rate Variability Scan

Heart rate variability, or HRV, measures the small variations in time between heartbeats.

These variations are influenced by the autonomic nervous system. When measured under consistent conditions, HRV can provide information about physiological regulation and adaptability.

HRV is affected by many factors, including age, breathing, sleep, physical activity, illness, medication, emotional state, and the testing environment. A single reading should therefore not be used to label a child as regulated, dysregulated, resilient, or stuck in “fight or flight.”

It also cannot explain why a child experiences meltdowns, rigidity, anxiety, or difficulty with transitions.

We use it as one indicator within a broader clinical assessment—not as a stand-alone answer.

Why Baseline and Follow-Up Measurements Can Be Helpful

Children change quickly.

They grow, develop new movement patterns, encounter new environments, recover from illness, experience changes in sleep, and respond to different forms of support.

A baseline gives us a point of comparison. Follow-up measurements can then help us observe whether the recorded patterns remain similar or change over time.

This does not mean that every scan must improve in a particular direction or within a set number of visits. There is no universal “perfect” scan, and results should not be used to guarantee progress.

Instead, repeat measurements allow care to be reviewed alongside:

  • the child’s clinical presentation
  • parent observations
  • physical examination findings
  • the child’s response to care
  • changing goals or circumstances.

Care should always be adapted to the individual child rather than dictated by a scan alone.

Understanding Chiropractic Terminology

Within chiropractic, the term “vertebral subluxation” may be used to describe altered spinal movement or function and its possible relationship with nervous system processing.

It is important to understand that this is a chiropractic clinical concept. It is not equivalent to the medical definition of a joint being partially dislocated, and it cannot be diagnosed solely through INSiGHT Scans.

At Coast Family Chiropractic, scan findings are considered together with the child’s case history and physical assessment when determining whether chiropractic care may be appropriate.

Where a child’s presentation suggests that further investigation is needed, appropriate referral should form part of responsible care.

Your Observations Still Matter

Parents know their children deeply.

You notice the subtle changes in their sleep, appetite, movement, mood, energy, comfort, and ability to cope. When you feel that something has changed, it is reasonable to keep asking thoughtful questions.

At the same time, it is important not to interpret normal medical results as evidence that something has been missed. A normal result usually means the test did not find the particular issue it was designed to investigate.

More Information, Not a New Label

Your child does not need every experience turned into a diagnosis.

Sometimes families are looking for a clearer understanding of how their child is functioning and whether there are practical ways to support them.

INSiGHT Scans can provide objective measurements of particular physiological patterns. They cannot reveal everything happening within a child’s nervous system, identify the cause of complex symptoms, or predict future health.

Their role is more focused: to add information to a careful chiropractic assessment and help monitor selected measurements over time.
