Plagiocephaly (flat head syndrome)

Positional Plagiocephaly (Flat Head Syndrome) and Chiropractic Care

Positional plagiocephaly, commonly known as “Flat Head Syndrome,” refers to an asymmetry in the shape of an infant’s head, often caused by prolonged positioning that affects cranial bone development. Recent studies, such as Murgia (2016), have indicated that over 90% of infants with plagiocephaly also exhibit restrictions in cervical spine range of motion.

Causes of Plagiocephaly & Potential Long-Term Effects

Plagiocephaly is primarily attributed to the prolonged positioning of the infant’s head, which leads to asymmetrical development of the cranial bones. Research suggests that a strong correlation between plagiocephaly and increased risks of developmental delays.

Can Chiropractic Help?

While there are multiple causes of plagiocephaly, chiropractic care can play a beneficial role. Our chiropractic team, trained in paediatric care, focuses on improving and restoring optimal cervical spine range of motion. We also utilise paediatric-specific craniosacral therapy techniques.

The optimal window for addressing plagiocephaly is within the first 6 months of an infant’s life due to the rapid growth and development of the skull. However, our team has successfully achieved significant improvements in infants older than 6 months.

If your child’s head asymmetry requires interventions beyond chiropractic care, we collaborate closely with some of Adelaide’s top paediatric physiotherapists and paediatricians.
