The 3R’s of Rapid Recovery From an Illness

When you or your child is under the weather, the way you support your body during recovery can make all the difference. These three essential steps—Rest, Replenish, and Recharge—can help you navigate illness and return to feeling your best.

1: Rest

One of the most important factors in both health and recovery is rest. When we’re navigating a busy, stressful season as individuals or as a family, it can take a toll on the body’s natural ability to maintain resilience. This can leave us feeling rundown and more susceptible to illness.

Prioritising extra sleep and downtime is key. This means allowing the body to slow down, getting to bed earlier, and taking breaks from screens, work, and other stimulating activities. While it can feel challenging—especially for kids—it helps the nervous system settle and supports the body’s natural healing processes.

2: Replenish

Nourishment plays a significant role in both wellness and recovery. Staying well-hydrated with water, electrolytes, and mineral-rich fluids can support energy levels and hydration. When appetite returns, focusing on whole, nutrient-dense foods like clean protein, healthy fats, and colourful fruits and vegetables can provide essential nutrients.

It’s common for kids (and adults) to have a lower appetite at the start of an illness. Once hunger returns, it can be a sign the body is ready to refuel, so this is the perfect time to focus on nourishing, whole foods to support recovery.

3: Recharge

The two systems that take the biggest hit during an illness are of course the immune system, but also the nervous system, which controls and coordinates immune function.

You’ll want to recharge the nervous system during the illness, and then absolutely load up on all immune system boosting and recharging supplements such as Vitamin D, Vitamin C, zinc, and so forth. Also things like bone broth, elderberry syrup, raw local honey, and various essential oils and homeopathic remedies can really help recharge and strengthen your immune system

Putting It All Together

Getting sick is a natural part of life. While we can’t always prevent it, we can have a plan for how to support the body through the process. By focusing on resting, replenishing, and recharging, you’re giving yourself or your child the best chance for a smooth recovery.
